Why Gann Used Maths
Introduction
Gann opened his lesson on forecasting with a strong statement: mathematics is the only exact science. He believed that every top and bottom in the market forms at an exact mathematical point in proportion to some previous high or low. This course teaches the price side of Gann theory: Gann angles, Gann resistance levels, the number 9, the Square of Nine and the Hexagon chart.
Gann's Simple View of Maths
Gann said you do not need advanced mathematics to use his methods. Whether you use geometry or calculus, you only do two things: increase or decrease. You add, multiply, subtract and divide. His tools are built on these simple operations.
The Circle, the Square and the Triangle
Gann used three basic shapes:
- The circle (360 degrees): used to measure both time and price. Key points are 90, 120, 180, 240, 270 and 360 degrees.
- The square: used to square price with time.
- The triangle: used to find one-third and two-thirds points.
Three Kinds of Angles
- Vertical angles: measure time (dates).
- Horizontal angles: measure price (support and resistance levels).
- Diagonal angles: measure the relationship between price and time (Gann angles or Gann fan).
Why Proportion Works
Markets are driven by people. Traders remember old highs, old lows and halfway points. Big institutions often plan buying and selling around halfway retracements or round levels. So when many participants act at the same levels, those levels become powerful. Gann organised these natural levels into a mathematical system.
Example: Simple Proportion in an Indian Stock (Illustrative)
Reliance Industries rises from Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,600. The range is Rs 400.
- Halfway point: Rs 1,400. Gann considered this the strongest support on a fall.
- One-third retracement: Rs 1,467. Two-thirds retracement: Rs 1,333.
- If Reliance falls and holds near Rs 1,400, a Gann trader sees a buying opportunity with a stop just below.
Time and Price Are Connected
Gann's most famous idea is that price and time are linked. A move of 45 points in 45 days is balanced. When price moves faster than time, the trend is strong; when time moves faster than price, the trend is weak. The next lessons on Gann angles explain this clearly.
Is Gann Maths Scientific?
Gann believed deeply in natural law and mathematical order. Modern traders use his levels because they often match real support and resistance, but no method works every time. Use these tools with stop-losses and confirmation from price action.
Study with GoPocket
Open the monthly chart of Nifty on the GoPocket app. Note one major low and one major high. Calculate the halfway point and the one-third and two-thirds points. Then check how often Nifty paused near those levels in the following months.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be good at maths?
No. Basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are enough, plus a calculator.
What is the most important Gann price level?
The 50% or halfway point of a range, which Gann called the centre of gravity.
Key Takeaways
- Gann believed markets move in mathematical proportion.
- He used the circle, square and triangle to measure price and time.
- The halfway point is the most important price level.
