What are textile stocks?
Textile stocks cover the whole chain from fibre to fashion: cotton and synthetic yarn spinners, fabric weavers and processors, home textile makers (bed linen, towels), technical textiles, and garment and apparel manufacturers and brands.
India is one of the world's largest producers of cotton and textiles, and the sector is a major exporter and one of the country's largest employers. Government support through production-linked incentives for man-made fibre and technical textiles, and large integrated textile parks, aims to expand it further.
What moves textile stocks
- Cotton and fibre prices
- Cotton is the key raw material; sharp swings in its price change margins for spinners and fabric makers.
- Export demand
- Orders from retailers in the US and Europe, and how much stock those retailers are holding, drive export volumes.
- Trade agreements and competition
- Free trade agreements, and competition from Bangladesh, Vietnam and China, affect how competitive Indian exports are.
- Domestic consumption
- Apparel brands and retailers depend on consumer spending in India.
What to check before investing in textile stocks
- Position in the value chain
- Spinning is a commodity business with thin margins; branded apparel and home textiles earn more but need marketing and design.
- Export share and key customers
- Dependence on a few large overseas retailers can make revenue volatile.
- Working capital
- Textile companies hold large inventories of cotton and finished goods; efficient working capital management matters.
Risks to know
Textiles are cyclical and low-margin in many segments, exposed to cotton prices, currency movements and global demand. Competition from lower-cost countries and changes in trade policy can shift orders quickly.
