What are consumer durables stocks?

Consumer durables are products households buy to use for years rather than days: air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, televisions, fans, lights, wires and switches, kitchen appliances, furniture, footwear, watches, jewellery and paints. Consumer durables stocks are the companies that make or sell them.

The sector is a bet on rising incomes and aspirations. As more homes are built and incomes grow, families buy their first appliances and later upgrade to better ones - a trend the industry calls premiumisation.

What moves consumer durables stocks

Seasons
Cooling products sell mostly in summer, and many categories peak during the festive and wedding seasons. A mild summer can hurt an air-conditioner maker's whole year.
Disposable income and credit
Purchases are often financed with easy EMIs. Income growth, job security and consumer credit availability drive demand.
Housing
New homes need wires, switches, fans, lights, paint and appliances, so real estate activity feeds demand.
Input costs and imports
Copper, aluminium, steel and plastics are major costs, and many components are imported. Commodity prices and the rupee affect margins; production-linked incentives aim to make more of these components in India.

What to check before investing in consumer durables stocks

Brand strength and pricing power
Can the company raise prices when costs rise without losing customers? Strong brands usually can.
Distribution reach
The number of dealers and outlets, and the company's presence in smaller towns, where much of future growth lies.
Gross margin
Revenue minus the cost of materials, as a share of revenue. It shows how well the company absorbs commodity swings.
Inventory
Seasonal businesses build stock ahead of peak demand. If the season disappoints, unsold inventory leads to discounting.

Risks to know

Consumer durables are discretionary purchases - people postpone them when times are tight - so sales slow in a weak economy. Competition is intense, including from imported and online-only brands, and a sharp rise in copper or aluminium prices can squeeze margins before price increases catch up.

Questions?

Consumer Durables Stocks: frequently asked questions

Quick answers about consumer durables stocks in India.

141 companies on NSE are classified as consumer durables stocks: 3 large cap, 8 mid cap, 33 small cap and 95 micro cap.

FMCG products - food, soap, toothpaste - are used up quickly and bought again and again. Consumer durables - appliances, electronics, furniture - last for years, so they are bought less often and demand is more sensitive to the economy.

It is the shift of customers towards more expensive, feature-rich versions of a product as their incomes rise - for example, from a basic fan to a designer or energy-efficient one. It usually improves a company's margins.

Open a free GoPocket demat and trading account, search for any of these companies by name or symbol, and buy the shares directly on NSE. Look at each company's business, financials and valuation before you invest - a sector or market-cap label on its own is not a reason to buy.
