Taiwan Index Hits Record High: TAIEX Jumps 2.55% to 49,712, Nears 50,000 Points
The Taiwan index is having a year few markets can match. On Monday, October 5, 2026, the TAIEX, Taiwan's benchmark stock index, surged 1,236 points to a record close of 49,712.04. That left it less than 300 points away from the 50,000 mark, a level that would have seemed unthinkable when the index ended 2025 below 29,000.
So why is the Taiwan index rallying this hard, and why are Indian investors searching for it? The short answer is one company and one theme: TSMC and artificial intelligence. Here's the full picture.
Key Takeaways
- The TAIEX rose 2.55% to a record 49,712.04 on October 5, 2026, after touching an intraday high of 49,770.66.
- Weak US jobs data cut expectations of another Federal Reserve rate hike, lifting global tech stocks.
- TSMC, about 41% of the index, rose 3% to a record NT$2,575 and added roughly 600 points on its own.
- By our calculation, the Taiwan index is up about 72% in 2026, while India's Nifty 50 is still well below its 2024 peak.
What Happened to the Taiwan Index Today?
The TAIEX ended Monday's session up 1,236.30 points, or 2.55%, at 49,712.04, after moving between 48,574.95 and 49,770.66, according to Focus Taiwan, the English service of Taiwan's Central News Agency. It was a fresh record close, extending a run of all-time highs.
Trading activity was heavy. Turnover climbed to NT$1.151 trillion (about US$36.2 billion), as per the Taipei Times. Foreign institutional investors bought a net NT$71.9 billion of shares on the main board, their fourth straight session of net buying, Taiwan Stock Exchange data showed.
On Tuesday, October 6, the index was broadly flat in early trade. Official data from Taiwan Index Plus, which operates the TAIEX, showed it a little below 49,700 in the morning session as traders paused just short of the 50,000 milestone.
Why Did the Taiwan Index Rise? The Fed Factor
The trigger came from the United States. Data released on Friday showed US nonfarm payrolls increased by just 29,000 last month, far below the expected 84,000, and the previous month's figure was revised lower, the Taipei Times reported.
Why does a weak US jobs report help Taiwanese stocks? Because it changes interest rate expectations. A cooling job market makes it less likely that the US Federal Reserve will raise rates again. Lower rate expectations tend to help technology stocks the most, since their value depends heavily on future earnings growth. AI infrastructure is also very capital-intensive, so cheaper money matters.
The contrast with a week earlier is striking. On September 29, the TAIEX fell 0.82% to 47,631.96 as rising US Treasury yields and crude oil prices pushed the odds of an October Fed hike to around 70%, Focus Taiwan reported at the time. In just five sessions, the index has climbed about 4.4%, by our calculation, as that fear faded.
How Much Does TSMC Drive the Taiwan Index?
More than any single stock drives almost any major index in the world. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker, makes up about 41% of the TAIEX's weighting, according to the Taipei Times.
On Monday, TSMC rose 3% to close at a record NT$2,575 and contributed roughly 595 to 600 points to the index's 1,236-point gain. In other words, nearly half of the day's rise came from one company.
Here's how TSMC's climb tracks the index this year:
| Date | TAIEX close | TSMC close |
|---|---|---|
| December 31, 2025 | 28,963.60 | NT$1,550 |
| April 24, 2026 | 38,932.40 | NT$2,185 |
| September 29, 2026 | 47,631.96 | NT$2,475 |
| October 5, 2026 | 49,712.04 | NT$2,575 |

By our calculation, TSMC is up about 66% since the end of 2025, while the TAIEX has gained about 72%. One policy change helped too. In April, Taiwan's Financial Supervisory Commission raised the investment ceiling that active ETFs could hold in a single stock, and since only TSMC exceeds 10% of total market value, it was the main beneficiary, Focus Taiwan reported.
Why Is the Taiwan Stock Market Rising So Fast in 2026?
The simple answer is that Taiwan's market is essentially a bet on AI hardware. Technology makes up about 88% of the benchmark index, most of it semiconductors, according to a Standard Chartered note cited by CNBC. The same note said Taiwan produces over 90% of the world's most advanced chips, those at 7 nanometres and below.
Every major AI data centre needs these chips. So when global companies keep spending on AI, the money flows straight to Taiwanese firms like TSMC, MediaTek and Delta Electronics.
This isn't a one-year story either. The TAIEX gained about 25.7% in 2025, closing the year at a record 28,963.60, according to CNA coverage published by Taiwan's Overseas Community Affairs Council. Its 52-week low stands at 26,395.98, as per CNBC market data, which means the index has risen nearly 88% from that low.
Is the Rally Risk-Free? Not Quite
A market this concentrated can fall fast. On June 10, 2026, the TAIEX dropped 1,478.90 points, or 3.31%, to 43,225.54, the sixth-largest single-day point fall in its history, Focus Taiwan reported. That sell-off was led by technology stocks.
There are other risks worth noting. When roughly 41% of an index sits in one company, any disappointment at TSMC hits the whole market. The rally also depends on the Fed: if US data turns hot again and rate-hike fears return, tech-heavy markets tend to feel it first. And Taiwan's geopolitical situation remains a long-running concern for global investors.
Even on Monday, not every stock joined in. Focus Taiwan noted that most non-tech stocks were largely subdued, apart from a 4.3% jump in the petrochemical index.
What Does the Taiwan Index Rally Mean for Indian Investors?
Here's why the keyword is trending in India. The gap between Taiwan and India in 2026 is hard to ignore. While the TAIEX is up about 72% this year, India's Nifty 50 closed at 22,556 on October 5, per Business Standard. That's about 15% below its September 2024 peak of 26,277, as Business Today noted this week.
Part of the story is what each market sells. Taiwan builds the chips that power AI. India's large technology companies sell IT services, a business that investors fear AI could disrupt. That's one reason Indian IT stocks have struggled. Read our TCS Q2 results preview to see how that pressure has played out, or track the TCS share price on GoPocket.
Foreign money flows matter too. Global funds allocate capital across emerging markets, and strong returns in Taiwan and other chip-heavy markets can draw money that might otherwise go to India. On the other side, India's electronics manufacturing companies, such as Dixon Technologies, are part of the same global hardware supply chain, though on a far smaller scale.

What Is the TAIEX? A Quick Explainer
The TAIEX, short for Taiwan Stock Exchange Capitalization Weighted Stock Index, measures the performance of all listed stocks on the Taiwan Stock Exchange, according to the index operator Taiwan Index Plus. It's weighted by market capitalisation, uses the 1966 average as its base with a value of 100, and is recalculated every five seconds during trading.
Because it's market-cap weighted, the biggest companies have the most influence. That's why TSMC, by far the largest, moves the index so sharply. Think of it like the Sensex, but with one company carrying a much bigger share of the weight.
What to Watch Next for the Taiwan Index
- The 50,000 mark: Round numbers often bring profit-taking. Watch whether the index can close above it.
- TSMC's earnings: Its next quarterly results and guidance will set the tone for the whole market.
- US Fed decision: Any shift in rate expectations will affect tech stocks quickly.
- Foreign investor flows: A fourth straight day of net buying is a sign of strong appetite, but flows can reverse fast.
