SIP Inflows Hit a Record ₹32,490 Crore in September 2026: What AMFI Data Says About Investors
Monthly SIP inflows into Indian mutual funds reached a record ₹32,490 crore in September 2026, up from ₹32,297 crore in August, according to AMFI data released on October 12. Equity funds drew net inflows of ₹38,306.55 crore, up about 31% from August. That happened in a month when the Nifty 50 fell about 6%, which shows retail investors kept investing through the decline.
Total industry assets still fell 5.1% to ₹82.64 lakh crore, mainly because of large debt fund outflows and lower market prices. Here's what the numbers mean for your own SIPs and portfolio.
Key Takeaways
- SIP inflows: ₹32,490 crore in September, a new record; SIP assets stood at ₹17.86 lakh crore.
- About 63 lakh new SIP accounts were registered in September.

Why Did Mutual Fund AUM Fall When Inflows Were at a Record?
Total assets fell for two reasons, neither of which is about SIP investors pulling out.
- Debt fund outflows: Debt schemes saw net outflows of about ₹1.83 lakh crore. Large outflows from debt and liquid funds at the end of a quarter are common, as companies withdraw cash for advance tax payments and other quarter-end needs. That's a general pattern; AMFI data doesn't break down who withdrew.
- Falling markets: The Nifty 50 fell from 24,080.40 on August 31 to 22,620.45 on September 30, about 6.1%, according to NSE data. When prices fall, the value of existing equity holdings falls too.
So the drop in AUM reflects market prices and corporate cash movements, while household SIP money kept coming in.
GoPocket Analysis: Three Things the Data Tells You
- SIPs are now a ₹3.9 lakh crore a year habit. At September's pace, SIP inflows run at about ₹3.90 lakh crore annually (₹32,490 crore × 12). SIP assets of ₹17.86 lakh crore are about 21.6% of total industry AUM, by our calculation.
- Money is chasing smaller companies. Small- and mid-cap funds together took ₹16,873 crore, about 44% of equity net inflows. Large-cap funds got just ₹859 crore, about 2%. Smaller companies can deliver higher returns, but they also fall harder in downturns.
- Tax-saver funds are losing favour. ELSS funds saw net outflows of ₹662 crore. That's consistent with more taxpayers using the new tax regime, where ELSS investments don't give a deduction under Section 80C.

How Does a SIP Work When Markets Fall?
A SIP (systematic investment plan) invests a fixed amount every month, so you automatically buy more units when prices are low and fewer when they're high. This is called rupee cost averaging. Here's a simple example with made-up numbers:
| Month | Amount invested | NAV | Units bought |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ₹10,000 | ₹100 | 100.00 |
| 2 | ₹10,000 | ₹90 | 111.11 |
| 3 | ₹10,000 | ₹80 | 125.00 |
| Total | ₹30,000 | - | 336.11 |
Your average cost per unit is ₹30,000 ÷ 336.11 = about ₹89.26, lower than the simple average NAV of ₹90. Averaging doesn't prevent losses if markets keep falling, and it doesn't guarantee returns. But it removes the need to time the market, which is why many investors keep SIPs running through declines like September's.
What Should SIP Investors Keep in Mind?
- Match the fund to your goal: Small- and mid-cap funds suit long horizons, typically seven years or more, and a high tolerance for swings.
- Check your asset mix: If most new money is going into small caps, your portfolio may be riskier than you intended.
- Keep an emergency fund separate: Don't rely on equity SIPs for money you may need within a year or two. Our guides to FD interest rates and PPF and small savings rates cover safer options.
- Know the tax: Gains on equity funds are taxed as short-term or long-term capital gains depending on how long you hold. See our explainer on LTCG tax on shares.
- Use the CAS: Your consolidated account statement shows all your mutual fund holdings in one place. Read about upcoming changes to the CAS.
Which Listed Companies Benefit From Rising SIP Flows?
Higher mutual fund activity tends to benefit companies that service the industry, such as registrars CAMS and KFin Technologies, and depository CDSL. Their earnings also depend on market levels and fee rates, so flows alone don't determine their performance.
