Axis Bank Share Price After Q2 FY27 Results: Profit Jumps 38%, So Why Did the Stock Fall?

Axis Bank reported a standalone net profit of ₹7,003 crore for the July–September 2026 quarter (Q2 FY27), up 38% from ₹5,090 crore a year earlier, mainly because provisions fell 52%. Net interest income grew 12% to ₹15,371 crore, but the net interest margin came in at 3.36%. Axis Bank shares fell about 6% over the two sessions after the October 17 results.

A 38% profit jump followed by a falling share price looks odd at first. It makes sense once you see what drove the profit and what the market was watching instead. Here's the breakdown. Track the live Axis Bank share price on GoPocket.

Why Did Axis Bank's Profit Jump 38%?

Axis Bank's profit jump came almost entirely from lower provisions, not faster core earnings. Provisions and contingencies fell to ₹1,694 crore from ₹3,547 crore a year earlier, a 52% drop, ANI reported. The year-ago figure included a one-time standard asset provision of ₹1,231 crore, which made the base unusually low.

Meanwhile, operating profit, the earnings before provisions and tax, grew just 6.4%. That's the number that tells you how fast the core business is growing, and it was modest.

GoPocket Analysis: What Was Axis Bank's "Real" Profit Growth?

To compare like with like, we can strip the one-off provision out of the year-ago quarter. Here's the calculation, with one assumption flagged clearly.

  1. One-time provision in Q2 FY26: ₹1,231 crore (pre-tax).
  2. Assumed tax rate: 25.17%, the effective rate for companies under India's concessional corporate tax regime. This is our assumption; the bank's actual rate may differ slightly.
  3. Post-tax impact: ₹1,231 × (1 − 0.2517) ≈ ₹921 crore.
  4. Adjusted Q2 FY26 profit: ₹5,090 + ₹921 ≈ ₹6,011 crore.
  5. Adjusted growth: ₹7,003 ÷ ₹6,011 − 1 ≈ 16.5%.

So on a like-for-like basis, Axis Bank's profit grew around 16–17%, not 38%. That's still respectable, and it's close to ICICI Bank's 20.1%. But it's a very different story from the headline number, and it helps explain why the stock didn't celebrate.

Why Did Axis Bank Shares Fall After the Results?

The market focused on three things beyond the headline profit:

  • Margin: NIM of 3.36% was below the 3.4% consensus. Every few basis points of margin matter a lot for a bank with a ₹20 lakh crore balance sheet.
  • Profit vs expectations: Profit of ₹7,003 crore was below the ₹7,157 crore consensus, even though NII beat estimates.
  • Slow operating profit growth: At 6.4%, core profit grew far slower than loans, which grew 23%.

How Fast Is Axis Bank's Balance Sheet Growing?

Growth was strong. Net advances reached ₹13,73,727 crore, up 23% year-on-year and 9% quarter-on-quarter, Business Today reported. Retail loans were ₹7,39,905 crore, up 16%, or 54% of the loan book. Month-end deposits grew 21% year-on-year, and the CASA ratio was 36%.

Term deposits grew 27%, far faster than savings deposits (12%) and current accounts (7%). That's a funding-cost issue: term deposits are more expensive than CASA, so when they grow fastest, margins tend to feel the squeeze. It's one reason the NIM came in soft.

Is Axis Bank's Asset Quality Improving?

Yes. Gross NPAs fell to 1.16% from 1.46% a year earlier, and net NPAs fell to 0.35% from 0.44%. The net slippage ratio fell 30 basis points to 0.75%, and annualised credit cost was 0.45%. Cumulative provisions beyond NPA provisions stood at ₹15,860 crore, which gives the bank a buffer if bad loans rise later. Capital adequacy was 16.27%.

What Are the Risks for Axis Bank?

  • Margins: Faster growth in costly term deposits could keep NIM under pressure.
  • Fee income and costs: Operating profit grew much slower than loans, pointing to cost or fee pressure.
  • Base effects ahead: The flattering year-ago comparison won't repeat, so future headline growth may look slower.
  • Rapid loan growth: 23% loan growth needs to be matched by stable asset quality over the next few quarters.

What Should Investors Watch Next?

  • NIM trend in Q3 FY27, and whether it moves back towards 3.4–3.5%.
  • Operating profit growth relative to loan growth.
  • CASA ratio and term deposit costs.
  • Slippage ratio and credit costs.
